Digital Betacam is a step up in quality from Beta SP. It offers greater lines of resolution, better color rendition and virtually no image degradation in the post-production editing process. This is because, unlike Beta SP, which is an analog format, Digital Betacam is a pure digital format. This means that there is no image degradation when the image is edited, even when it has been transferred digitally for many generations.
The result is that Digital Betacam provides an even sharper, crisper and more detailed master than Beta SP. This may be important to you depending upon the use of your product. For instance, if you need your material to match the high technical specifications of programs such as 20/20, Dateline NBC, and 60 minutes, this will be your format of choice. Many clients feel that the modest increase in cost over Beta SP is well worth the quality edge.
Another benefit of Digital Betacam is that it allows for your project to be completed in the widescreen format, which is compatible with High Definition Television. This will greatly increase the lifespan of your project and your ability to incorporate your footage into future projects. However, be aware that there will be a noticeable quality difference between materials originated in Digital Betacam and those shot in true High Definition. We shoot our Digital Beta projects with the state of the art Sony DVW 700WS or Sony DVW 790WS, two of the finest cameras available.
